Former Foster Youth

serving young adults 18-26

For most young adults turning 18 is a celebration but for youth in foster care, this birthday is often filled with uncertainty, lack of support, and feelings of rejection and abandonment. Approximately 18 percent of Virginia foster youth exit the system at age 18 without a legal guardian or permanent family connection.  This is nearly double the national rate of 9 percent. This reality places approximately 500 young Virginians at higher risk for homelessness, unemployment, mental health challenges and in need of government support well into their mid 20's.

At VKB we see the need to continue to support these young adults as they navigate the challenges they face. We recognize that supporting these young people is critical to our goals of reducing generational foster care.

Building Social Capital

It's not what you know, but who you know

Former foster youth often launch into adulthood without the benefit of a network of peers or caring adults who can help them navigate the many challenges they face. VKB recognizes the value of building social capital -- intentional relationships for mutual support -- and finds ways to bring former foster youth into environments where they can learn to network. We connect former foster youth with organizations that provide training, fellowship, mentoring and other opportunities for connection. We also offer opportunities for these young adults to share their stories in a safe, supportive environment.

Milestone Moments

we see you

Every milestone is worth celebrating. Here are some of the ways VKB supports former foster youth.

  • We show up and cheer!
  • We partner with other nonprofits to recognize accomplishments and special events.
  • We provide resources to stabilize living arrangements.
  • We advocate for more resources for education, housing, and workforce development.
  • We never give up on connecting youth with families and caring adults.

Mentors

Finding a mentor can make all the difference. Here are a few groups we have worked with that assist former foster youth to transition out of care well. If you are interested in becoming a mentor or would like to find a mentor please connect with these organizations directly.

Stable Communities

Launching into adulthood is difficult at any age. Whenever possible VKB works with referral partners to provide some of the basic necessities to help former foster youth become established. ADULT ADOPTION

The need for a family doesn't go away because someone turns 18. Adult adoption is possible with the consent of all parties. Youth still connected with a case manager should reach out for assistance. If a youth has been a participant in VKB's I Belong Project, or would like to be, they may continue to benefit from our family recruitment efforts until a potential adoptive family is identified.
